Life Behind the Counter- Chapter One

I’ll preview each of the 37 chapters of the book about Chuck and his liquor stores, first with Chapter One. Chapter One is entitled “A Humble Beginning” and it certainly was. Chuck didn’t talk much at all about his childhood or much of his life as a young man. Most of what is written about in the book came from people who knew Chuck while he was growing up and in his early 20’s.

Chuck spent his high school years and his 20’s living in Lorain, Ohio. It was from those years that a number of stories are told including:

  • What happened to Chuck as a boy to make him despise chicken his whole life.
  • Chuck’s almost enlistment in the United States Army.
  • Chuck’s (somewhat) close encounter with Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell.
  • Chuck’s self-employment while in his 20’s….and why this job required him to have three separate telephone numbers.

Chapter One ends with Chuck in his early 30’s deciding to try out the liquor business with his dad as a partner. I’ll introduce you to their first liquor store when I give a sneak peak at Chapter Two in a few days. Thanks for reading!

Wow! Sounds very interesting. Chuck was one-of-a-kind. I wish I had been mature enough when I worked for him that I would have recognized how good his advice was and how humorous he could be, as well.
